New Jersey's certification pathways for Direct Support Professionals offer structured career advancement — and higher pay at every level. Here is how to navigate the path.

New Jersey has one of the most developed professional certification systems for Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) in the country. Understanding it can significantly impact your earning potential.

The NJ DSP Career Pathway

Entry Level: DSP I

No prior certification required. Must complete DDD pre-service orientation, CPR/First Aid, and employer-specific orientation. Typically starts at $17–18/hr.

DSP II: Certified Specialist

Requires 1 year of experience + completion of the NJ College of Direct Support curriculum (online, approx. 40 hours). Pay bump: $1–2/hr.

DSP III: Senior Specialist

Requires DSP II + 3 years of experience + Person-Centered Planning training. Often qualifies for supervisory roles. Pay: $22–26/hr.

Positive Behavior Support (PBS) Certification

A separate credential for DSPs working with individuals with behavioral support needs. PBS-certified DSPs are in extremely high demand. Pay: $24–28/hr.

Where to Get Certified

The NJ College of Direct Support curriculum is available through Rutgers University's Institute for Disabilities and through several provider agencies. Some employers sponsor certification costs.
